This chapter defines and describes effective communication, factors relating to the psychological wellbeing of patients and those close to them, and issues around safeguarding adults and their families. It discusses interpersonal communication using language comprising verbal and non‐verbal expression, and considers the necessary adjustments to communicate with specific populations, such as people with sensory impairment or dementia. The process of offering psychological support to patients and the management of factors that contribute to or compromise psychological wellbeing are considered. There are specific sections on adjustment, denial and collusion, anxiety and panic, depression, anger management and delirium. Finally, ways of working that enhance a patient's safety within and outside healthcare organizations are explored, with relevant legal frameworks outlined.
